Inspector Bob'Inspector Bob' is a fictitious character personifying the trials and tribulations of adventurous souls who end up in actual news headlines because of the situations they have placed themselves in through ignorance and/or indifference. Alaskan AvalancheA 30-year-old man was killed in a slide in Hatcher's Pass, Alaska. It was the first avalanche fatality in Alaska this winter.Inspector Bob was buried three feet beneath hard slab blocks (some as large as a kitchen table) for 40 minutes, reported the Anchorage Daily News. Both Bob and the friend he was snowshoeing with were caught in the avalanche, described by Kip Melling of the Alaska Mountain Safety Center as 'relatively small by Alaska standards.' It was 84 feet wide across the crown and the fracture line varied from eight inches to 12 inches deep. |

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the slide was triggered by Bob and his friend as they traversed a 38-degree snow-covered slope. Bob was completely buried while his friend was partially buried and able to free himself. Neither was wearing a transceiver. Inspector Bob was found by local rescuers 40 minutes after the slide. He was pulseless, not breathing, and had blue lips. He was pronounced dead the day after the avalanche.
'This could have gone the other way if both people were trained, not only in avalanche recognition but in avalanche awareness,' Melling told the Anchorage Daily News. |
