Inspector Bob

'Inspector Bob' is a fictitious character personifying the trials and tribulations
of adventurous souls who end up in actual news headlines because of the situations
they have placed themselves in through ignorance and/or indifference.

720 Minutes To Live

Inspector Bob is driving north along RR 472. The road is loose gravel with steep shoulders and normally well maintained all year long. The weather forecast called for occasional snow flurries but with the high winds, blowing snow and falling temperatures he is traveling in near whiteout conditions. He knows that the turn off to the wellhead is exactly 34.5 km from highway 412 which he passed 15 minutes and 12 km ago. At 34 km he spots his turn-off and continues east for another 3 km before he skids off the edge. The truck leaves the road and plunges nose down into the ditch. Once he realizes that he will not be able to free the truck, he calls for help on the radio. He is assured that help will be dispatched immediately but it will take about 4 hours to reach his location. He sits back and waits for help to arrive.

660 minutes to live ...

Bob passes the time by smoking cigarettes and listening to the radio. He leaves the truck running in the freezing cold.

420 minutes to live ...

The truck finally runs out of fuel and stalls but Bob knows that help will soon arrive. He sits in the dark and quiet, patiently waiting.

380 minutes to live ...

Bob knows that help should have arrived by now so calls the base station for an update. Before the batteries die, Base tells him that the recovery crew is just now arriving at the 34.5 km cut off.

200 minutes to live ...

Bob is getting cold and desperate. He knows that he should do something but can't think of what. He decides he should go over to the trees and start a fire or something. When he gets there he realizes that he has no matches and no way to start a fire. Maybe a better idea would be to head back to the main road. He follows the treeline but quickly finds that the snow is deep and the going is very slow and tiring. Soon he is taking 10 steps and resting for a couple of minutes.

120 minutes to live ...

The recovery crew has a hard time navigating in the blowing snow but manages to cover the road to the well-head twice without finding Bob. They decide that maybe he wasn't on the right road to start with so go further north to the next cut off. Again no Bob. They try the same at the cut off just south of the road. They almost miss Bob's truck as they pass it because of the dark and the snow. They get out and search all around the vehicle but can find no sigh of Bob. They assume he walked back to the main road and return that way.

90 minutes to live ...

Bob cannot go any further. He lays down on the soft, comfortable snow and begins to feel warmer as the drifting snow piles over him. He thinks that this is what he should have done to start with. Warm and relaxed he falls asleep. Occasionally he wakes to a semi-conscious level but decides that it is easier to just lay here for a bit longer. (Actually for the rest of his life)

The next morning the snow has stopped but it still takes the rescue crews until early afternoon to find Bob's body.
