Inspector Bob

'Inspector Bob' is a fictitious character personifying the trials and tribulations
of adventurous souls who end up in actual news headlines because of the situations
they have placed themselves in through ignorance and/or indifference.

Shrinking Island

Stranded for three days with little food and water, Inspector Bob and two friends watched the surging river erode their tiny island while they waited for help.

'The water was running very fast with lots of dead fall' Bob said. 'Once it gets up that high it starts ripping trees off the shore'. Bob and his friends set out Friday for a 'weekend canoe trip' on the Berland River, about 50 km northwest of Edson.

Soon after they set out, the water started to rise. Bob's canoe hit a logjam and capsized - tossing the 43-year-old and his friend into frigid waters.
They swam to shore and erected a makeshift shelter from tarpaulins. One canoe was lost, but the three had the gear and supplies from the second to survive on.

'We were all pretty chilly,' Bob said. 'We were going into hypothermia so we built a fire to dry out.'

The three men waited for the river to slow, Bob said. But it never happened. An hour later it rose another foot. When they woke in the morning, the river forced them to higher ground. Over night the river rose another four feet.

Late Monday afternoon, not long after they finished the last of their rationed food, a search helicopter rescued the three. None of the men were injured. Bob said they were lucky because family and friends were notified of their estimated arrival time.

'That's where experience comes in. They knew enough to stay put because once they didn't make their rendezvous, people would come looking for them,' an Edson RCMP Staff Sgt said.

Bob said the ordeal was draining and he had little time for reflection when he returned home Monday night. 'I cracked open a couple of beers, pounded back a few cigarettes and went to sleep. I had to work in the morning.'
