Inspector Bob

'Inspector Bob' is a fictitious character personifying the trials and tribulations
of adventurous souls who end up in actual news headlines because of the situations
they have placed themselves in through ignorance and/or indifference.

Rollins Pass

Inspector Bob, a 29-year old telemark skier, was caught in an avalanche 25 miles west of here yesterday afternoon.

Bob, and friend Peter, had been skiing near Rollins Pass since Monday. 'They were out camping and were doing everything they should have been,' said Sheriff Tom. 'They had checked snow conditions and were skiing down things one at a time. They were very experienced. There are no rules snow lives by, though.'

The Rollins Pass slide started in the bowl where the two men were skiing. It caught Inspector Bob immediately, and reached Peter, who was below his friend, a few seconds later. Both men were swept down several hundred feet and came to rest in Yankee Doodle Lake at the bowl's base. The avalanche shattered the ice that had formed over the lake.
Peter credits the lake with saving his life. 'When I first came to a stop, I could feel my legs dangling. Initially I thought I might be hanging over a cliff, but I quickly realized I was in water.'

After struggling to pull himself out of the lake, Peter, now soaking wet in sub-zero temperatures, called for his companion several times. Obviously he didn't get a response. 'I think it was then that I went into survival mode' said Peter. He knew that he was not yet safe. Peter skied the three miles back to town where he notified authorities of the avalanche. Rescuers picked up Inspector Bob's avalanche beacon signal around 11:00 P.M. and found the body shortly after midnight. It was buried under ice and three feet of water in Yankee Doodle Lake.

Peter is listed in fair condition at the Hospital after being treated for hypothermia and frostbite to his hands and feet. 'Peter did the smartest thing he could have by getting himself out of there,' the Sheriff said.
