Inspector Bob

'Inspector Bob' is a fictitious character personifying the trials and tribulations
of adventurous souls who end up in actual news headlines because of the situations
they have placed themselves in through ignorance and/or indifference.

Successful Search

I had a good day yesterday. We found a nice young man named Inspector Bob alive and well on the sixth day of a search in the BWCA blowdown area. The week included a snowstorm that dumped 8 inches of snow with 50 mph winds, with freezing nights and frozen lakes, then another night of rain. He'd been out 10 days instead of his expected four.

On the fifth day, we all became a little discouraged to find Bob's tent two miles from the trail, with all his gear in it, which he had obviously left before the snowstorm a week before. At that point the dogs were hitting on the water and we couldn't help but think about cadaver dogs and recovery. The next day we heard a whistle 3/4 mile north of his tent, and were stunned to find him alive, in good health and spirits, with frostbitten toes, in a beautiful shelter he'd built from a downed tree and branches. He had spent 7 days in there, with no food, matches or equipment, stayed dry during the snowstorm and the rain, and waited for us to find him.
The search process changed dramatically on the fourth day. After the first three days the IC determined to give up the ground search. On the fourth day, we got permission from the Sheriff's Dept. to continue it (basically starting over, including calling in dogs for the first time) and our rescue unit was given command. This isn't meant to brag about our squad, but to let you know that I believe the class on Search Management Systems, and my opportunity to share it with other members of Lake County Rescue, saved Inspector Bob's life.
